Now I'm not being morbid here, but my bestest chum and I were having a natter on this subject yesterday and I thought I'd voice my views.
Namely on whether or not suicidal folk are cowards. (And I mean the genuinely death inclined sort not the over dramatic schoolgirl who saws through a wrist with a blunt spoon!)
See now the whole running away from a problem, that me thinks, is feather and beak with a cool yellow streak down the back material and there I won't argue the point. You do have to wonder if there isn't perhaps some way, any way to fix the problem they're facing. But we do all know that something can push people past their endurance and that's when the whole thing starts to look ice-cream cake appealing!
For arguments sake though lets say there isn't any hope left and poor Roofus wants to leap off the roof to certain doom. Poor guy.
Here's the part I think takes courage because of two things:-
1. The dude is taking his life! And there's usually rather a lot of pain involved. Not to mention the chance of paralysis, mutilation or having to wear a poop bag for the rest of your days. He's weighted all that up and he's still going to do it! Smart, er maybe not, but cowardly, hell no!
2. The dude doesn't know what happens after you die! It's a big thing when you stare death in the face and accept it's business card. There's so much talk and speculation, do you go to heaven? Hell? Purgatory? Do you utterly cease to exist? Do you get reborn? Do you end up in another universe? Do you end up reliving your life over and over (which would be kinda funny for both the suicidally inclined and the not so). But the fact remains that we don't know, and this here little bugger is going to go into that unknown anyway! Definitely brave, but again not so sure on the whole 'most intelligent choice of the century' bit.
What's your view?
